WV Penitentiary

P1020128, originally uploaded by Petie_in_Cbus.
The West Virginia State Penitentiary is a retired, Gothic style prison located in Moundsville, West Virginia and operated from 1876 to 1995. The structure was originally built for 480 prisoners, but by the early 1930s it housed a total of 2,400.
The place has a pretty violent history and said to be haunted. Apparently, it is noted for one of the most imfamous riots, and rumor has it that they took the place hostage by sitting on the burial mound next door (more on the mound later). It even housed Charles Manson for a bit, and he had requested to return to it. Sadly, we didn't get there until after our work day, therefore were too late for a tour, but apparently you can stay from dusk-dawn for $50- and that includes a showing of the MTV Fear episode where it was featured, pizza and pop. Vacation anyone???

Tales of the Miami Trail

P1010789
Not as much biking or bike camping as desired has been happening around here this summer, but I was fortunate to get out over the long holiday weekend.
The first day was rough for me. I should have listened to myself and taken two water bottles and I didn't have my wallet so I could not purchase things at my leisure. By the time we reached Milford I was so dehydrated and mad at myself for not listening to myself that I was very cranky. The town bank said it was 97 degrees out...
At this point, having not brought the map was not playing towards our advantage either. We continued south and weaved though Cincy to the HofBrausHaus.

Fortunately we were able to use some Marriot points and get a room, which meant no camping gear, which meant lighter bikes! Less stuff! Yes! And we got to watch the fireworks:

The 80 miles home the following morning were much nicer. Most likely since I slept til 10:30, but I was also able to stop and take some pics.

Through this route we had a big breakfast but then sustained ourselves on Hawaiian Ice, lemonade and leftover 1/4 waffle piece. I thought we were fine in the 90 degree heat until about the 60 mile mark where I really wanted ice cream, and actually ate some. Mint Choc-chip, and it was goooddd. I must have been delirious. Or who knows, I may also start liking cats, dogs and other similar household pets that shed and have potential to produce bodily functions everywhere...

4th of July, Cbus

This year we were fortunate to still have loaner-kayaks and headed downtown for the 4th of July Fireworks. It's tough to describe in other words than "It was crazy." We were rained on by still-burning embers and other combustion byproducts. Grilling veggie dogs in the parking lot beforehand made it a perfect holiday!

Comfest 2010

, originally uploaded by Petie_in_Cbus.

So Comfest has come and gone, and it was a good one! It was great to share the booth with 2 other lovely ladies, so in a fit of laziness, you can read Sweet Stella's wrap up here, including nice pics!

One luxury of the booth-tri was the ability to head over to the Lindsey Gallery for Amber Groome & Jim Bloom's Opening:
