Fort Boonesborough State Park, Winter Trip

ft. boonesborough state park
Roadsigns on the drive from Columbus to Richmond, KY point out Ft. Boonesborough State Park, and MapMyRide showed bike trails through the area, so one cold day we ventured there. Anticipation was high- for something to do in the cold.

We got to the parking lot and though appreciative of a restroom, there was no noticeable trailhead. We found a walking loop but not what was expected- 15yrs ago or 15 degrees warmer- the website still made it look like a destination- judging by the boarded-up gift shop, closed campground and cruising cop, it wasn't that fun... But I have big dreams that it'll be my Alum Creek of Kentucky...

Silvermine Arch 225

Silvermine Arch
Silvermine Arch Trail. 78 steps, 27 degrees, 4 snowy stumbles, 1 handful of roasted chic peas eaten.

It was a great hike in the cold, but also one of the first days that I was a believer in the iphone over DSLR. The photojojo magnetic lenses are pretty great and convenient, and most appealing- affordable.

"This trail leaves the backpacker's parking area at Koomer Ridge Campground and follows a dry wooded ridge northeast to Silvermine Arch, a natural arch with a large waterfall below the cliff."

Wild Turkey Distillery

Wild Turkey Distillery
Kentucky Bourbon Trail stop Number 1
Wild Turkey Distillery
It was a chilly, dreary Friday in Kentucky when we made our way to the Wild Turkey Distillery on the other side of Lexington.

Tours run on the hour until 3:00 and there were about 6 folks in the group. Wild Turkey had been purchased in the last few years by the same folks who own Skyy Vodka and the acquisition resulted in a brand new plant, visitors center and vodka bottling plant.

The visitors center held a small gift shop, hallway of the company's history and a tasting room overlooking the Kentucky River:

Later in the year, I had hit Barton's, Jim Beam and Maker's Mark.

Happy Bungalow

I don't have children, but I try and get gifts I think my friends' children will enjoy. And I totally think Happy Bungalow and Little Alouette are great gifts. (but who knows, chime in if you have kids & feel differently)

And coupled with barn bag I made of a friends' grandma's fabric, the toys made it a sweet gift. Especially because everyone has a unicorn on their farm these days, right?

In the midst of the polar vortex I ventured north to visit the new baby Roman and forthcoming baby Molly. It was awesome.
